Make a DonationCivic engagement
In over 120 cities between March and May 2006, more than four million immigrants and their allies marched and spoke out for the rights and dignity of their communities. The energy and activism these mobilizations produced caught many by surprise and had a significant impact on the public and policy debate. The We Are America Alliance (WAAA) was formed in the aftermath of these unprecedented mobilizations across the country. The Alliance is comprised of various community organizations, immigrant rights organizations, and ethnic organizations. Together we believe that increased civic participation by immigrants is the next logical step needed to further the goals of those who marched.Through our collaboration, we hope to increase the capacity and skills of the organizations that are new to the work of civic participation by developing suitable models and practices for civic engagement within the Latino, Asian, and immigrant communities. One of the WAAA’s primary goals is to improve the coordination of the member organization’s civic participation efforts, and eventually, the WAAA hopes to create a “culture of participation" that is supported at every level by grassroots groups and ethnic media.
