Make a DonationSocial justice
When our children are being arrested in our schools for the “crime” of misbehaving it is a sign there is a not only a failure in our school systems but in our justice system as well. The civil rights and social justice communities have come to understand that it requires collective action to stop this moral obscenity of incarcerating our youth. Organizations are working hard to keep their efforts going throughout the country, but our movement lacks a coordinated space to allow us to strengthen our relationships nationally, support work locally, and enhance the organizing going on in our communities with non violence direct action trainings to reclaim the moral ground of our work. The Gathering is an answer to the generational and racial schisms that have many justice organizations working in their own silos. We create an intergenerational, interracial space to allow the justice community, in its broadest sense, to get to know one another and to find the common agenda that will allow us to support one another as we continue our work. The “Gatherings” bring together young civil rights and peace activists and organizers of all races and give us a safe space to highlight the work being done in all communities and to discuss the overlap. The Gathering also offers nonviolent direct action training and dialogue by our civil rights elders to connect our young people to importance of nonviolence. We are using SNCC as our tactical model. Comparable to the unity Jim Crow laws created with the black community; we believe the justice system and its inherent antagonism to our community is the common denominator that will allow us to transcend the race and generation divides in our strive to reclaim our children and young people from the cradle to prison pipeline. Our coalition is made up of organizations representing Black, Latino, Native American, Asian, and White community-based organizations whose missions focus on justice for its constituencies. Every attendee and member of the Gathering must have an organization behind them that represents their community.
