Environmental sustainability
Global Community Monitor is an environmental justice and human rights nonprofit that empowers industrial communities to recreate a clean, healthy, and truly sustainable environment. GCM provides hand-on tools for impacted communities to monitor their neighborhoods and hold corporations and governments accountable for their actions. We specialize in projects that empower communities, like our famous "Bucket Brigade," a grassroots air monitoring program. GCM is working with organizations in over 15 different countries and 20 communities in the USA to further strengthen a new global network of Bucket Brigades. The network is implementing innovative models to improve policies and practices relating to clean air, clean water, and human health in communities neighboring industrial facilities. Over the past dozen years, GCM has developed and pioneered the use of Bucket Brigades as a method for communities to document and understand the impacts of industrial pollution, to launch advocacy efforts against polluters, and to win stunning victories-- such as in Norco, Louisiana, where Shell agreed to demands to relocate the community from its severely toxic fenceline. In recent years with the support of a growing number of founders, we have worked with Goldman Prize winners Bobby Peek and Margie Richards in Africa, Asia, and Europe to transfer the U.S. Bucket Brigade model, and have met with strong success, and increased demand. As a result an international network has formed, comprised of organizations that are winning landmark changes at the polluting facilities and in the policy arena. GCM is now at a strategic juncture will enable us to strengthen this growing international network/movement by: - Providing our unique technical assistance and training to provide more communities with proven and emerging environmental monitoring tools to win quantifiable reductions in pollution. - Doubling our staff by hiring a Program Director to focus on increasing our core program work and which will also allow the Executive Director to focus on research and development of new monitoring tools and policy solutions. - Sharing and replicating innovative landmark policy solutions that we have won with partner organizations to raise industrial standards worldwide.- Strengthening the capacity regional partners to set models for growing the movement in different parts of the world. Using our "bucket brigade" model to leverage concrete reductions in climate changing emissions. - Promoting sustainable development projects in polluted communities, such as green energy and clean small scale development as an alternative to toxic industrial jobs.
