NQAPIA's mission is to advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian Americans, including South Asians, and Pacific Islanders. To network LGBT Asian American leaders and build organizational capacity. To be a voice for Asian Americans and immigrants in the LGBT community and for LGBTs in the mainstream Asian American community. The purpose of the Alliance is:1. To connect LGBTQ API organizations with each other for collaboration and collective identification on issues of common concern, 2. To build a strong foundation for collaboration and interaction with other communities, 3. To facilitate the work of collaborative projects that strengthen the LGBTQ API community, and4. To support, nurture, and develop existing and emerging LGBTQ API leadersThe gay pride slogan “We are everywhere!” is a truism and LGBT APIs are often invisible both in the mainstream Asian American community and gay community. Indeed, the LGBT community has not engaged non-English speaking Americans. 80% of all Asian Americans speak a language other than English in their homes. This invisibility has promoted bias. For example, the Chinese-language newspaper World Journal published a national editorial against same-sex marriage. We must engage the community. We are planning a multilingual education campaign through focused outreach to the Asian ethnic media and educational pieces translated into several Asian languages, namely Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Khmer, Thai, Tagalog, Hindu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Urdu and Arabic.
