Project Description:

The Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco (HRCSF) is a 28 year old organization dedicated to helping tenants defend their rights. We provide free counseling on landlord / tenant issues for both rent controlled and subsidized tenants in San Francisco. Our services are provided in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Russian. We assist over 4,500 tenants per year with problems such as evictions, repairs, no heat, illegal rent increases, and navigating the Housing Authority system. Our clients are 90% extremely low income, 30% are seniors and/or disabled and 40% are single mother households. HRCSF is a membership organization and was founded in the basement of Old St. Mary's Church in 1979. The Housing Rights Committee "SELF DEFENSE FOR RENTERS" motto continues to today. We operate with five paid staff and over 20 volunteer counselors. If you know someone who has a housing problem, or someone who wants to volunteer their time by helping educate others, please call HRCSF.
