While practiced with different models and for various missions, at the most fundamental level, fiscal sponsors are nonprofits that enable the movement of resources from funders and donors to projects, activities, ideas, and organizations that share the fiscal sponsor’s mission.

The vitality of the nonprofit sector is due, in large part, to the commitment and creativity of individuals that organize to solve problems, address needs, and create change. Fiscal sponsorship is one model that contributes to the nonprofit sector’s flexibility and innovation. It is a practice that has evolved as an effective and efficient means for starting new charitable initiatives, increasing the capacity of existing organizations, delivering public services, and seeding social movements.

Tides Center is committed to raising the understanding of fiscal sponsorship among the public and the philanthropic communities, as well as building and sharing best practices among fiscal sponsors. See our Publications page for additional resources on fiscal sponsorship. Tides Center also maintains a modest online Fiscal Sponsor Directory. If you are a fiscal sponsor interested in participating in the National Network of Fiscal Sponsors or being listed in the Directory, contact Heidi Hernandez Gatty at hgatty(at)tides.org.

Tides Center is the nation’s largest fiscal sponsor of progressive social change initiatives. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, legally and financially responsible for all our projects and activities. By serving as a fiscal sponsor, we enhance the nonprofit sector by providing increased capacity to advance public benefit. To learn more about what Tides Center provides our fiscally sponsored projects, see the our Services section.

"We are in challenging times for nonprofits… We need the organizational structures that will allow everyone to be more efficient and smarter with the money that is available. Fiscal sponsorship is one of these."
